The science of abuse

I received an email today from The BUAV, a charity that works towards a world where no one wants or believes that animals should be used in scientific experiments for clinical trials. Susie, one of their researchers, completed an undercover operation inside a UK laboratory and this is her report:

What I found was absolutely heart-breaking – puppies, kittens and other very young animals used in experiments for animal vaccines, and then killed, some at just a few weeks old, and their bodies cut up for examination.

Watch our film: Born to die (Warning: the film contains images some people may find upsetting)

During the 8 month investigation, 92 beagle puppies, 10 adult nursing female beagles, at least 15 kittens and rabbits, calves and chickens were killed.

Please make an urgent donation to help us stop this sickening practice.

Mindy, it took all my courage to go in each day, but I knew I had to carry on so I could help the BUAV reveal what was happening to the puppies and kittens I was becoming so attached to.

Ben was a friendly kitten. He enjoyed me making a fuss of him.  I was terribly sad when he was killed on 22nd August after being used in two experiments. I felt so powerless that day.

The kittens, like Ben, were used in experiments that caused them to suffer weight loss, high temperatures and ulcers. At less than 6 months old they were killed, their bodies cut up and then dumped in a bin as waste.

One little beagle puppy I became attached to was Milo. It was so sad when Milo and his brothers and sisters were separated from their mum Zoe to be used in an experiment. They were less than 5 weeks old. Their mum was taken away to be killed with three other mothers who also had young puppies.

Many of the puppies were used in tests and then killed; some at just 6 weeks of age. They were given a lethal injection and their small bodies cut open for examination.

Their trusting mothers were seen as nothing more than breeding machines to provide puppies to be used in experiments. There was no system for finding homes for these sweet animals; most were simply killed. Some of the puppies could also have been released but I was shocked to learn that this rarely happened.

These past eight months have been some of the most difficult of my life.  But I kept going because if we are ever to see the end of such cruel experiments, the public must find out the truth.

Susie’s report is heart-breaking for the vast majority of people to read. Anyone who knows dogs and cats will be aware of the amount od suffering those animals will have been enduring in these scientific tests. I do not believe there is ever a valid case for such abuse and should be made illegal. If you agree please visit the BUAV website and lend your support.

I am blogging every day to raise money for Unicef. Please find out more about the campaign here and donate if you can.

Thanks for reading.
